i have moved

As you may or may not have noticed, it has been a while since an update (and that when I was updating, they were infrequent). This is because I have been working on something new. When I started this little website I wasn't in the best place and intended it to be a sort of relaxing diary space. I no longer need that and am hoping to move onto something more discussion orientated and engaging. Don't worry, I'll still have posts like you see here, but as I find myself buying less and getting rid of more possessions, the taking-photos-of-things-I-own thing is hard to sustain. I'll be talking about clothes , products, films, music, and food, but all under the umbrella of conscious and sustainable living.

I have seen a general consensus over the past few years, that only grows stronger, that believes our modern world to be harrowing and scary. We don't want to work for 40 hours a week in stuffy office building. We don't want to work for other people at all. We miss the idea of community and helping one another out. We long for it. I find people very receptive to the idea of small villages with bakers and rose gardens and toymakers. It is an idealised view that I make up, an escapism, however the more I thought about it, the more I realised that it didn't have to completely be escapism. I came to understand that I had the power of choice, and that I could choose not to drag myself through long work weeks and chain supermarkets. We all have that choice, and I hope to shed some light on products, people, and ideas that are based on a simpler, less scary/exhausting/death-inspiring way of living.

So I do hope you'll join me. My website isn't finished yet, the layout is just temporary, but hopefully the content will speak for itself. Same name, different URL, different e-mail. Take note!

another month

1. the piece of cake from the bakery that looked better than it tasted. in fact, it spurred me on to properly commit to baking regularly. i baked a chocolate mud cake for my brother's 12th birthday and it was a big hit. (and was all the better because they keep for a week in the fridge so it's like a week-long party, so long as you can get past the guilt... let me tell you, eating baked goods became a lot harder once i was aware of how much butter and sugar is in everything!) i'm hoping to make a sponge cake next, perhaps i could make a post about it! // 2. this dress cost me $3 from an op shop. it's the perfect length for me too (at the knees) and makes me feel nice and summery - especially because the weather here has been the most excellent, bearable summer weather i think i've ever experienced. it's hovered between 25-29 degrees C every single day (usually at this time of year it's between 30-35 and humid beyond belief). my moods are very much influenced by the weather and so lately i have been very happy indeed! // 3. my great friend Jody recently went on a big trip to the USA & Canada, and made a special stop at the Eloise shop in The Plaza Hotel of New York City! just for me! The Plaza is perhaps the only thing in the USA that interests me... i've always planned on saving up enough so i can go stay there someday. // 4. my stack of library books. i tend to go a little crazy with my reserves, but it is hard to stagger things when you're in a waiting list and it's impossible to know when books with be returned and become available. luckily i read quickly (i've read 23 books already this year??? bonkers, i know!) so i know they'll be finished before they're due back. (they're also stacked in order of to-read, which is slightly maddening when i want to stack them in order of book size... but this way it's easier!) are any of you reading anything good at the moment?

this and that

A mix of treasures, both old and new. I let the New Year in quietly (was asleep by nine p.m.) and I think everything has been the better for it. I wrote out all my resolutions and I am excited for the year to come, though I expect it may be quiet and intermittent - a required quiet time of skill building and earning before I can go off on a big adventure. Now if only I could get the hang of this "two-thousand-and-thirteen" business, and come to terms with the fact that I will be twenty this year. Twenty.

christmas

We had a small Christmas this year, and I think it suited everyone very well. Especially with the strange it-doesn't-really-feel-like-Christmas phenomenon! However there was still glazed ham and trifle so I was happy. I'm really, really happy with everything I got, including the cutest package from my lovely friend Dani, who I got to meet in person for the first time this year when she came to stay with me. And I was extra happy when all my gifts were received with joy. Admittedly I'm hoping to steal a peek at the Horrible Histories books I got for my brother!! My new Estee Lauder foundation was purchased with good old Christmas Money after a lot of deliberation. I've slowly been upgrading all my make-up supplies, from low quality products that I've never been happy with, to products that have excellent reviews and are made specifically to deal with the type of skin I have. I've only had it on from when I had it put on in the store so far, so I don't feel comfortable giving it a review yet, but I was really, really happy with it and couldn't stop looking at how nice my skin looked in the mirror...!

I hope everyone had an excellent Christmas and here's to hoping the New Year will be glorious. x

oh summer

I have a terrible habit of romanticising the idea of Summer to the point that it is unrecognisable as being an actual Summer that I have to experience here in Australia. Tomorrow it is going to be thirty-nine degrees c and it's put me in an exceptionally bad mood, because that is absolutely too hot. However, instead of moping I decided to try and get myself in the Summer spirit... which only ended in a worse mood when I was reminded how much my ideal Summer looks like something out of 1920s-30s Britain. But really! Sailing regattas and tennis and homemade lemonade and picnics and garden parties and strawberries and boating and trips to the seaside. Though I suppose these things are all still real today, however it may be slightly more attainable if I actually got on with moving to England (possibly becoming a reality within the next year??!!) and also became exceptionally rich/magically transformed into Kate Middleton somehow...
