small comforts

If there's one thing you need to do, it's order a copy of Wish magazine before they're all gone (which I've heard they almost all are!) I received my copy quite a while ago now, but I've flipped through it again and again, still surprised at how perfect it is. I've tried out a lot of magazines over the years, from the likes of Elle & Vogue, to Frankie & Lula, but nothing has ever stuck with me. But somehow Wish is everything I've ever wanted those magazines to be. Pretty, free, unpretentious, cosy, & friendly. No one telling you what to do or what to look like. Just something to relax with, alongside your favourite comfort food or drink (chocolate for me, always).

I couldn't not buy this 110th Anniversary edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit either. Especially since I eyed the special hardcover editions of Winnie-the-Pooh and missed out on them. (They were a tad expensive, but oh-so beautiful. I expect I'll dream about them wistfully for years now, unless I can find them elsewhere...) I know I've been extremely quiet around these parts, but count yourselves lucky about it really. I've been terribly uninspired and generally just down in the dumps! Boring!! I'm very determined that this will only be a temporary thing though, and since lately I've felt my interests flaring up again, I'm hoping I'll have more to share with you soon.

I feel like I'm always showing off books. I don't mean to really. They're just always so interesting is all. I've had this one for a while, but it's a favourite. If you accused me of being a ten year old girl I'd only half deny it.

I'm strangely excited for Easter. I'm not even sure why, as my family aren't religious, so Easter has always been chocolate and holidays. Though this year it will be less of a holiday. I have so much study to do. Boring!! If someone was to rank people by how studious they are, I'm sure I'd be in the bottom 5%. I never learned good study habits, so now I sit about watching Gilmore Girls instead of writing essays. Oops!

I'm still working out a system for outfit photos. I'm not even sure I want to consistently post photos of me posing in outfits. It makes me feel a bit weird. Anyway, this is a really close up, strange shot of what I wore today to laze around. Very interesting, I know!

books books books

I remembered Brambly Hedge from my childhood, and I went on the website and read about how Jill came up with the idea for it.

"The London Underground would form a key role in the unintended development of Brambly Hedge in Jill’s mind. She travelled to art college on the Central Line from Epping, “I came to hate this journey, the carriages were crammed full of people, everything seemed so filthy. It was like a glimpse of hell.” Jill would shut herself off and escape into an inner world, a hedge bank of mice. These moments of escapism from the subterranean bustle gradually became what we now know as Brambly Hedge."

I could really relate to that feeling of hating the journey. Last year, before I moved, I had to catch the train for 2 hours to University, and 2 hours home, and I hated it. It was so tiring, the air conditioning would give me headaches and there'd always be rowdy school kids or children being noisy and (mostly) annoying. So I'd put in my headphones, get out my notebook, and write about characters and ideas for stories. I'm glad I now only have to do those journeys when I go back to see my family, instead of every other day.

I also bought the box set of The Mysterious Benedict Society. I've heard lots and lots and lots about them and decided I couldn't wait any longer. They arrived yesterday and even though I am currently reading a different book, I couldn't help myself but start reading the first one anyway. I used to read multiple books at once all the time, and it's not like it's a 'bad' thing to do. I've just been in the habit of only reading one book at a time recently.

Apart from buying books, I've really not been doing a lot. I have been listening to my favourite band of high school a lot. It makes me feel so strange. I finished high school in 2010, but it already feels like forever ago (thankfully). I hated high school more than the train trips to University, that's for sure!

time for reading

I'm finally on University holidays, so I have time to do all sorts of things, including catching up on my reading. I got this "best loved books" volume when op shopping with my sister (for just $2). It includes the titles: Little Women (Louisa May Alcott), Tales of Poe (Edgar Allan Poe), Mutiny On The Bounty (Charles Nordhoff & James Norman Hall) & Messer Marco Polo (Donn Byrne).

I haven't finished Little Women yet, but Beth is already my favourite. Which I feel predictable in saying, however I can't help but relate to her apprehension of strangers and passion for music (though I like to play guitar). Of course I like all the sisters, though, and Amy being described as a snow maiden was the prettiest thing.
